Large dogs need their own special bed where they can comfortably rest and sleep in. Aside from being durable, you also need to find the right size of bed for your dog.
Dogs that are larger or older are in need of durable large dog beds where they can comfortably stretch out on and rest.
As a guideline, large breeds of dogs generally include the following: Airedale Terrier, Bearded Collie, Border Collie, Dalmatian, Doberman Pincher, German Shepard, Golden Retriever, Great Dane, English Settler, Labrador Retriever, Mastiff, Rottweiler and many more.
Best of the Large Dog Beds
Because dogs come in a variety of sizes, there are many sizes of dog beds to choose from.
You’ll find that manufacturers of dog beds will make the same bed in a range of sizes – from small size beds, on up to XX-large beds.
See below for our list of top 5 dog beds that are available both durable and come in large sizes.
K9 Ballistics Original Tuff Dog Bed
This extremely durable dog bed comes in 3 large sizes: the large size measures 34″ x 40″, extra large measures 38″ x 54″, and the biggest dog bed, extra-extra large measures 68″ x 40″.
The cover of the bed is made with a special, proprietary blend of ballistic fibers – very tough for your pooch to destroy!
The cover is closed with Velcro instead of the typical zippers used in many other beds. This avoids the tugging that dogs sometimes do to their beds with the zipper tag.
The cushion itself is made with a medium-grade memory foam, providing excellent and lasting support and comfort.
You can let your dog enjoy using this dog bed inside or out, as the cover is resistant to dirt, water, odor and hair. It is also machine washable for easy cleaning when needed. This bed comes with a manufacturer’s warranty of up to 90 days on the cover.
King USA Extra Large Imitation Lambswool Dog Bed
This dog bed measures 42 x 32 x 7 inches and it is the perfect bed you can give to your dog when you wish to stop them from sleeping on your bed.
These are very comfortable and the cover can be easily removed and cleaned because of the elastics at the bottom of the bed.
The thick foam makes it last for more years to come and the fabric where your dog lies is also very soft and comfortable.
The elastics seam at the bottom of this bed makes it easier to remove the cover but the bare bottom makes the foam dirty. It attracts hair and dirt that is why it too needs to be cleaned.
Coolaroo Steel Frame Pet Bed
The large size of this cot bed has an area of 43.5 x 31.5 inches. It’s designed to elevate your dog so that it will not touch the cold and hard floorings or the hot ground outside.
It comes with a 4 year warranty against UV degradation and it is resistant to your common dog problems such as fleas, mites and molds.
This is great for large Dalmatians, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweiler, German Shepherd and Dobermans.
Although this is advertised as a durable dog bed, there are still some dog owners who are unsure about its durability.
Some say that they threads used are brittle and others are complaining about paying for the shipping in case you want to claim the warranty.
Kuranda All-Aluminum Chewproof Dog Bed
When you have a large dog who is fond of chewing his bed, check out this bed. It is made of chew proof aluminum frame and has 3 different sizes for large dogs, ranging from large to XX-large.
Designed as a cot style, this bed keeps your pet elevated and it can be used indoors or outdoors.
Aside from being chew proof, this bed also offers orthopaedic support to your large dog. There are many colors to choose from and it also comes with a 1 year warranty.
Although the frame is chew proof the fabric could still be damaged by persistent scratching and chewing.
Although there is not really a chew proof and scratch proof dog bed in the market today, the materials used for this bed make it more difficult for your dog to ruin it. The materials are durable and tough but they can still be damaged.
Extra Large Orthopedic 100% Memory Foam Pad Pet Bed with Durable Denim Cover
Does your large dog need orthopedic support? If so – this is an extra large dog bed, measuring 40″ x 35″ in size, using a 4″ extra-thick therapeutic memory foam pad.
This bed provides your dog relief from aches and pains by contouring to his or her body, allowing for more restful sleep.
The memory foam is also resistant to molds and mildew, dust mites and bacteria. It holds its shape and support – providing years of comfort.
Covering the mattress foam is a durable denim cover with an internal waterproof cover to protect it. The materials are very comfortable, durable and easy to clean when needed.
The manufacturer provides a bonus of a light weight MicroSuede cover with a zipper – great as a replacement when cleaning the other cover.
Hi
I have a mastiff cross staff that has gone through God knows how many beds. It’s getting not only annoying with tidying up the constant fluff stuffing foam ect… It’s also very expensive.
I think what’s happening is he likes to nest. He scratches and spins around and around. If he makes a hole he then pulls out all the stuffing. Like he has a fetish for fluff and foam.
Do you have any segestions of what bed would suit him if you have any. He’s a chunky lad and bigger then your average medium size dog but not as large as a Great Dane or Woolf hound.
He has torn up sofas and hundreds of dog beds. Did get a waterproof tough outer shell one before, cost me a lot for a dog bed. He had it shredded in 2weeks. Thought he might grow out of it, he’s four now so guess not. We rescued him at 6months old. Not sure he had ever had a bed before us, as he was found skin and bone outside in a yard to fend for himself.
Please could you send me your segestions with prices and pictures.
Thank you for your time
With thanks

Hello Donna,
Thanks for your question. We would suggest that you get a cot style dog bed for your Mastiff. Cot style beds do not have cushions and therefore not much to chew on but the frame. Therefore, when choosing a cot style dog bed, look for one with a durable frame that is resistant to chewing. Check out one of the dog beds from Kuranda which come with a one year guarantee on the frame of the bed.
We discuss a couple of Kuranda dog beds on this page: https://www.durablebedsforfido.com/5-top-chew-proof-dog-beds/
Hope this helps!
I have a St. Bernard/Golden Retriever mix. He is 160 lbs. He loves to sleep on our couch but gets hot and ends up on the floor. Can you recommend a good bed that has a cooling feature.
